Manual drilling in Mali
The cost of bringing heavy drilling equipment to remote communities can be very high. In addition, some places are simply not accessible: heavy trucks can't reach the little islands in the Niger River basin. Manual drilling is a good alternative: the required material is light and the cost is 5 times lower than the cost of a normal drill. Protos Mali and local partners have trained 7 drilling companies, trained 6 metal workers (to make and repair the tools), and developed a manual. For this program, Protos collaborates with Practice and Unicef.
